The World Health Organization has concluded that the daily protein requirement should be between 10% to 15% of daily caloric intake. Specific amounts are derived from your “ideal body weight”. The link below provides a calculator for daily protein intake.
While nsinopoli suggested that protein intake can be derived by using your ideal body weight, you also need to take into consideration your actual weight and how active you are. The average person needs between 40 and 70 grams of protein per day. However, if you are very active you need more protein to support your hard worked muscles. Athletes, or people who are extremely active – you workout vigorously on a regular basis or you workout and have a physically taxing job like construction work – need about .5-.8grams of protein per pound.
