Trees do all kinds of things for us. Here are just a few examples: They provide carbon sequestration while creating oxygen. They are an important building material. They provide food and medicines. They have an aesthetic appeal to people. They prevent soil erosion. They provide habitat for animals. They provide wood for fuel. These are just some of the examples of what good trees can do.

Trees also serve a purpose after they die. They return nutrients to the soil. This is why it is common to use wood chips in a garden to add nutrients to the soil. Also, dead trees provide habitat for insects that feed forest animals and even people. The Korowai and Kombai tribe of Indonesia’s New Guinea (the tree dwelling tribe) cut down trees so they will decompose and harbor grubs that the tribe will later collect for food. http://www.takemefishing.org/fishing/overview?gclid=CPjNvfWFraMCFSFciAodciBH5g . Trees provide many forms of recreation including climbing, rope swings, tree forts. There are also simple services provided by trees that we often take for granted such as shade. Trees provide goods and services that cannot be replicated by man made objects.
