According to Siel, an environmental activist and writer living in LA the best facial cleanser she has come across is the Toner Tea Bar by Arcona. While expensive at $38 for a bar of soap, she says it lasts her over 6 months and all but 2 of the ingredients in the soap score low on Skin Deep the cosmetic safety database by the Environmental Working Group. However, she isn’t as please with the the large plastic jar packaging, which seems wasteful for such an eco-friendly cleanser.
If that doesn’t sound like what you’re looking forward then you could also try her runner up – Avalon Organics Facial Cleansing Gel. This is more affordable at $12 for 7 fl. oz. It wasn’t her top choice, but she felt it did a decent choice and is easier to purchase because it is available at Whole Foods. However, it ranked higher on the cosmetic safety database, which means that it is not as safe for your skin. It lasted her a couple of months, which also means that it would go through as much plastic packaging as you might use buying one bar of Arcona’s soap.
Personally, I have found that facial cleansers and moisturizers are great if you make them yourself. This link is for a homemade recipe with baking soda, almond oil, and honey. Honey is almost a miracle ingredient because it won’t expire and it doesn’t grow bacteria. It is great for your skin, and I use it as a mask. I would Google homemade facial cleanser recipes and tailor it to your specific needs. It will probably be a lot cheaper this way, and by buying the ingredients yourself, you will truly know what is going into your product.
