Global dimming is the reduction of irradiance in the Earth over time. It is said to be caused by particles such as in aerosols. It interferes with the hydrological cycle and has a cooling effect, which sometimes masks otherwise worse effects of greenhouse gases and global warming. Global dimming started to occur around the 1950s.
Global dimming is the phenomenon of air pollution hiding the full and true effects of global warming by blocking sunlight from reaching the earth and cooling the planet (according to James Hansen, by up to 1.8C). As we cut back on air pollution, the planet will get warmer because the sun won’t have to fight through the pollution and the cooling effect of the pollution will no longer be felt.
