The glass snake is actually a legless lizard that has a tail that can break off easily.  See the picture below for one example of a glass lizzard/glass snake.[img_assist|nid=157334|title=Glass snake/lizard|desc=|link=none|align=center|width=640|height=434]

Glass snakes are reptiles that resemble snakes, but are actually lizards. Even though they don’t have any legs, their head shape and the fact that they have movable eyelids and external ear openings identify them as lizards. They reach lengths of up to 4 feet long and feed mainly on insects. Their name comes from the fact that they have the ability to deter predation by dropping off part of the tail which can break into several pieces, like glass. The tail remains mobile, while the lizard remains still, distracting the predator and allowing the lizard to escape.

The Glass Snake is not a snake at all, but rather the common name for a lizard without legs. Glass Snakes can be found throughout Eurasia and in the south and central parts of the United States. Despite looking like snakes, they have eyelids and ear openings like other lizards. Also like some other species of lizards, they have the ability to lose their tail, and generate a new one in its place. The nocturnal Glass Snake lives in fields and feeds on a diet consisting of mostly insects, slugs, and worms.
