The Coral Pink Sand Dunes derive their color from the Navajo Sandstone that surrounds them. This sand itself was carried from the Virgin River to the bottom of the Cane Beds. High winds come through the area, pick up loose sand only to drop them onto the dunes. The dunes are estimated to be 10,000-15,000 years old.
The color comes from iron.
