What is a coal gasometer?

A coal gasometer is a GIANT gas tank used to store coal gas after it comes from a power plant and before it is distributed. Some famously revitalized gasometers in Vienna (see citation) are 230 feet tall and 197 feet in diameter. Gas can now be stored much more efficiently in high-pressure tanks, so gasometers of that size are pretty outdated.
