Do you mean a garter snake? There are many species of garter snakes, and they are the most widely distruibuted snake genus in North America. Garter snakes are usually striped with a plan or checkered background color. These stripes help them blend in with their background. They are small in size, reaching a length of up to three feet with a very narrow body.

The snake gets its common name from its resemblance to a garter, a thin band people used to wear to hold up their stockings.

A checkered garter snake (Thamnophis marcianus)

An eastern garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis)
