Tomatoes would probably yield the most food for a small space – especially if you grow them upside down. Others are strawberries and lettuce.
I agree with the answers by “catcran”. I would add that beans, peas, and other climbing legumes are great space savers. There is even a type of bean called the, “Red Chinese Long Bean” that grows over a yard long. It is used in stirfry and is available from the Seed Savers Exchange.
