Nothing came before hydro power in terms of electricity generation. Before hydro power, everything was done by hand. Humans can generate electricity by turning cranks, but not much. The first large-scale power plant was run by a simple water wheel. Unlike modern hydro-electric dams, water wheels would simply sit on top of a river or stream and turn with the flow. Due to the intermittent nature of many streams, this made it difficult to generate a steady supply of power all year round. However, old-fashioned water wheels were also easier on fish.
