What is friction breaking?

It has to do with the use of friction to slow down your car.  By converting heat energy into kinetic energy through friction, the brakes are used on the hubs of the wheels.  For more info on friction and other types of brakes, check out the site below.

If you’ve ever slid your couch across the floor, you’ve probably noticed that it is much easier to push something heavy once you get it moving.  The reason for this is because you have “broken” the static friction on the feet of the couch, which applies a much greater negative force than kinetic friction (moving friction).  “Breaking” is the term applied when converting static friction to kinetic friction.
