What is a free range chicken?

It is quite self-explanatory: contrary to the popularly used method of confining animals in small spaces, (while more economical, this raises moral and sanitary concerns) free range points to a method of raising animals without small confines, allowing them to roam at will (with or without fences).

“Free range” means that birds that are raised and sold for meat are can be outdoors at some time, as certified by the government.  There are no rules regarding time outside or condition and size of the “range”.
