Tree rings show the age of a tree. It marks where the dark wood at the end of on growth season meets with the light wood at the beginning of the next growth season. The growth occurs in the cambium which is the sheath between the bark and the wood and causes the tree to grow in both height (with roots and leaves and branches) and diameter, as you can see in the width of the trunk.
