Northern cardinals are primary consumers, meaning they eat mostly plant products, including seeds and fruits, such as dogwood, grapes, buckwheat, grasses, mulberries and blackberries. They also frequently suplement with bugs, including centipedes, insects and spiders. As primary consumers, they are in turn consumed by secondary consumers, which may include snakes, foxes and birds of prey.
