A food chain is what we call the ‘chain’ of animals that eat each other. For instance, a mouse is eaten by a snake, who is eaten by a hawk, and when that hawk dies, it decomposes and feeds worms. For more in detail info and examples, check the link.
A food chain describes the series of predators feeding on their prey. It will begin with a plant that is eaten by an herbivore or omnivore (an animal that eats plants and animals) and then a carnivore (which eats animals). There may be additional links in the chain depending on the species of interest and the ecosystem.
Most ecosystems are complicated so we often look at FOOD WEBS, which show various interconnections among predators and prey.
