As of 2008, Forbes declared Utah to be the fastest growing state in America, with a 2.53% population increase from 2007 to 2008. They attribute this to a baby boom (with 40,000 babies born in Utah in 2007!).
The runner-up, Arizona (2.31% population increase over the same years), attributes its growth to a series of recent housing booms.
As of 2010, Texas is currently the fastest growing state. It gained 478,000 people between July 1, 2008, and July 1, 2009, according to the Census Bureau. After the 2010 census, at least three new seats in Congress will mostly be added for Texas.
As an aside, Las Vegas is the fastest-growing city in America.
According to a report by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, in terms of GDP, Oklahoma was the fastest growing state in 2009. The state had a GDP growth of 6.6%. Apparently, that was most economic growth any state experienced in 2009.
