Currently the fastest commercial jet in operation is the Boeing 747, with a cruising speed of Mach .84 (555 mph). However, the Concorde SST was the fastest commercial jet while it lasted before the accidents which led to its discontinued use. The Concorde clocked in with a top speed of Mach 2.4 or roughly 1350 mph.
There were a faster commercial jets than the Concorde. The Russian Tuplov Tu-144 first flew before the Concorde did on 12/31/68. Its top speed was 1,553 mph. Unfortunately one crashed during an air show on 6/3/73. After that a few flights were made, but it was soon retired thereafter.
