Typically thoroughbred horses are known and bred for their speed. The fastest horse ever was Secretariat, who ran the 1.5 mile Belmont Stakes in 2:24 in 1973 (about 16.8 meters per second). In horseracing, there are different lengths to be considered. The Quarter Horse is an exceptionally fast sprinter and can reach up to 47 miles per hour, or about 20 meters per second, for short distances.
