Gold miners are faced with every day dangers – working with little to no safety equipment and handling poisonous chemicals like cyanide – all while working extremely long hours and making less than $1 a day. While nearly 100 million people across the world work in the gold industry, one that typically is linked to wealth, most gold miners lead very impoverished lifestyles. In 2009, gold joined 3000 other certified Fairtrade products, whose producers are guaranteed a given price for their products as well as additional “improvement premiums” like health care and education improvements. Purchasers of Fairtrade gold, like other Fairtrade products, are now given a peace of mind in regards to worker treatment and sweatshop practices.
