There are several factors that affect soil fertility, most of which involve what is in the soil. The three main nutrients in soil that plants need to grow are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. These are denoted as N-P-K on any fertilizer you buy. Coupled with these nutrients, plants also need minerals to grow, such as boron, chlorine, cobalt, copper, iron, manganese, magnesium, molybdenum, sulfur, and zinc. The fertility of soil is also helped by the microorganisms that inhabit it, as well as the structure of the soil, so water can drain through it well.
