The root causes of eczema are unknown, but the condition is “thought to be linked to an overactive response by the body’s immune system to (certain) triggers.” Eczema is often found in families who have a history of asthma and allergies, so there is evidence to suggest that there is a genetic component to eczema.
Flare-ups of eczema are often triggered by contact with certain rough materials, working with detergents, being too warm or too cold, touching certain animals, or even having an upper respiratory infection of cold. Stress often exacerbates eczema flare-ups.
Individuals that have elevated IgE antibody levels tend to get it as well.
