Most tropical teleosts, the colorful fish in coral reefs, change their sex at some point. Some go from male to female, some female to male, some switch mutiple times, and some have both sexual organs at the same time! This is typically very unusual in vertebrates, but in this one group it is the norm. The behavioral switch can occur in just a few hours, followed closely by physiological changes caused by hormones. Clownfish are a good example of fish that are born male and become female, while many species of goby switch back and forth throughout their lifespan.
