Frito-Lay North America, Inc., the company that manufactures SunChips, Lays, Tostitos, and Cheetos to name a few, currently uses 100% compostable packaging on a select few of their Sunchips brand of chips. Instead of being thrown away like normal chips bags, the Sunchips bag can be composted into compost soil that abounds with healthy nutrients promoting healthy plants to spur from this compost. The Sunchips brand is actively pursuing better methods of packaging and are continually working to enhance their compostable packaging to meet the feedback provided by consumers, the highest and most notable being the reduction of noise made by the bag. To further praise the company, Sunchips are developed solely using solar energy in their manufacturing plant in Modesto, CA.
The 100% compostable bags have been recalled, by every flavor except for the original, by Frito-Lay North America, Inc., due to customer complaints for the noise that the bags make (first citation).
Apple Inc., has been working for years to provide packaging that is both sturdy and minimized. Smaller packaging equates to more units shipped per shipping cycle, which equates to lower Carbon emissions (second citation).
