Geothermal power is power extracted from heat stored in the earth. It has been used for space heating and bathing since ancient Roman times, but is now better known for generating electricity. Geothermal power is cost effective, reliable, and environmentally friendly, but has historically been limited to areas near tectonic plate boundaries. Geothermal electricity is generated in 24 countries around the world including the United States, Iceland, Italy, Germany, Turkey, France, The Netherlands, Lithuania, New Zealand, Mexico, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Russia, the Philippines, Indonesia, the People’s Republic of China, Japan and Saint Kitts and Nevis.
