Chicken litter, or poultry litter, consists of poultry manure, bedding, spilled seeds and feathers. Originally used as a fertilizer, chicken litter is also used as cattle feed. Although cows are herbivores, according to BSE expert, Neil Lamming, they have four stomachs so that they can still digest and receive nutrients from chicken litter. This doesn’t make it an optimal feed for cows though, many consider it unhealthy but the FDA does not currently have a ban on chicken litter. The answer boils down to mainly producing a cheaper, more affordable meat.
