What is environmental mitigation?

Environmental mitigation is a term used mostly in the US in environmental policy. In the simplest terms, it refers to the lessening or offsetting of environmental impacts made on natural resources by humans. Often this means that if a company has completely destroyed a natural resource beyond repair, it will have to purchase a credit to help out another mitigation project in an unrelated area. Often times, private environmental mitigation companies such as Restoration System LLC are contracted to do the restoration.
