Kennedy was a longtime supporter of the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which helps needy families cut their energy bills through weatherization and more energy-efficient building materials.
Kennedy also demanded that auto companies improve their fuel-economy standards in response to rising oil prices, and fought to support other efforts to promote renewable energy. He was able to secure $25 million in funds from the 2009 stimulus package to build a wind-energy testing facility in Massachusetts!
Over 30 years ago, Ted Kennedy sponsored the first legislation establishing fuel economy standards. In 75, he introduced a provision to reduce the oil depletion allowance which allowed oil companies to exclude a portion of their revenues from taxation. In 07, Kennedy also sponsored the America Competes Act, which established the Advanced Research Projects Authority to increase R&D efforts in clean energy.
