One of the most important environmental law might have been the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).  The law had three major components to it: It established a national policy to protect the environment; it required that environmental impact statements be prepared for major federal actions having a significant effect on the environment; and it created the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ).

Back in the early 1970s, Congress passed the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act which was some of the first environmental legistlation in the U.S. and so set quite a precedent in environmental law and regulation.

The clean water act has been pretty monumental resulting in the protection of many wetlands and other navigable waters within the United States.  This has led to a better awarness of water quality and many of the water ways in the US being cleaned up.  NEPA has also been a great act part of which requires that each action taken out by a federal agency or funded by a federal agency must undergoe a environmental analysis.
