What is the environmental impact of a wasteful health care system?

Hospitals use a lot of waste (many go through several tons every day), but the majority of it (75-90%) is similar to household waste. The reset of it is infectious or hazardous waste and has to be disposed of differently. There are companies whose job it is to treat this waste. However, the risk to the environment is great if hazardous waste is dumped in inappropriate areas, or if it is incinerated without filtration.
