Recycling plastic uses a lot of energy. First, simply transporting the plastic to a processing plant uses energy. Processing the material back into a usable form and transporting it to where it will be used also requires energy. Typically this energy is provided by fossil fuels, which emit global-warming-causing greenhouse gases. Nevertheless, recycling plastic is still about two thirds less energetically expensive than making it from scratch.
