The creation of the islands is having a large effect on the marine habitat and animals in the area. The construction is burying coral reefs, oyster beds, and subterranean fields of sea grass. They are threatening many marine species as well as the species that depend on the marine species for food. Some of the beaches near are eroding because of the disruption in the currents caused by the new formations. Another devastating point is that the Palm Jebel Ali island chain in built in what was a marine preserve. In order to keep up the marine life for tourists to enjoy, developers plan to encourage more life, possibly introducing non-native species, which could be disastrous.
