Worldwide, the cement industry is responsible for a full 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. This is a significant contribution to global warming, and problematic partly because it is unclear whether the impact of making cement can be reduced by very much. The cement manufacturing process relies on burning coal to generate temperatures of 1,500 degrees Celsius inside of kilns, and is hard to reach this level of heat without burning fossil fuels. The only way to reduce the cement industry’s contribution to global warming by very much may be to scale back our reliance on this product.
