What is the environmental impact of artificial sweetener compared to real sugar?

Some artificial sweeteners are actually not processable by your digestive system. So they simply pass right through and do not present any nutritional value. If it took a lot of energy to produce these artificial sweeteners and they are not providing any value other than taste, you might consider this a big waste of resources. Compared to real sugar which is processable by our digestive systems, real sugar does not waste environmental and energy resources to satisfy a human taste.
