What is the Energy Star Homes Program?

Energy Star Homes is a project designed by the US Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency to encourage new homes to be as energy efficient as possible.  Like Energy Star appliances, which are certified as energy efficient by the EPA, Energy Star Homes have features that minimize wasted energy, curbing the carbon footprint of a home while reducing the amount you have to spend on utility bills.  In response to the creation of this federal program, several states have come up with programs designed to help designers of new homes make their buildings to Energy Star standards.  Buildings across the country are major users of energy and contributors to global warming, so projects like Energy Star Homes have great potential to help us reduce nationwide greenhouse gas emissions.
