What is the effects of flushable tampons on water quality or recyclability?

Tampons, even the ones that claim to be flush-able, cause problems for plumbing and the environment. They are usually made from petroleum products with lots of chemicals (like bleach, and the pesticides from the cotton) that then get leached into the water. It is best to wrap them in toilet paper and throw them away. There are also eco friendly versions of tampons.
