One of the greatest dangers to the fishing and sea food economy is overfishing. If a population is overfished one year it may not return the next and its numbers may not increase significantly for years to follow. Regardless of laws and restrictions, overfishing is definitely harming the economy. Harmful fishing methods which catch excessive amounts of bycatch damage already fragile ecosystems and translate into low or no profit for fishermen. If trends continue, there may not be a fishing market in the long run.
