The term ecology refers to the environment and its relation to the living organisms within it. Ecology itself is a very broad term, as it contains many sub-disciplines. One reason for this is that there are so many organisms existing within our Earthly environment, from trees to birds to humans.
Broadly, “ecology” (the scientific field) is the study of the relationships between organisms and each other, as well as their environment. It’s a branch of biology that tries to look at entire biological systems, as opposed to simply studying the chemical composition of rhino blood or the social behavior of chimpanzees. It attempts to look at the larger web of life and how everything influences everything else. It’s a comparatively new field, and is by its nature is so broad as to resist easy definition.
