What is the ecological role of marine benthic organisms?

Benthic organisms, or benthos, are those organisms that live in or near the seabed. As light is very limited in this zone, benthic organisms rely on decaying matter for sustenance. One of their important roles as detritivores (organisms that feed on decomposing organic matter) is thus aiding in decomposition. Furthermore, benthic organisms such as oysters, clams, sea anemones, and sea stars are a food source to fish and other organisms.
