What permaculturists do is before you create and plant a bed, put chicken wire flat along the bottom. Permaculture prefers to use raised beds (a long mound called a berm) which will trap water when it rains, preventing it from running off your garden surface too much. Another option is to install a Hawk Pole in your garden. This will give hawks a place to sit and look for gophers, mice, rats, and moles for dinner. Gophers are only a problem when the soil is sandy enough for them to crawl through. Land with natural bedrock beneath the soil won’t enable gophers.
