First of all, there are different types of runoff that may contaminate water systems. These include agricultural, lawn, highway and mine runoff as well as that from industrial sites, landfills and hazardous spills. Since runoff comes from various sources, there may not be one method that is easiest to use in solving this problem. Contaminants might be extracted using filters, chemicals or biological processes. Detention ponds and wetland systems may serve as places where contamination can be treated, and vegetation buffer zones may prevent water contamination from occurring.
