Earth Day was first celebrated on April 22, 1970, by 20 million Americans and has been credited with launching the environmental movement in the United States. Earth Day was founded to raise awareness of environmental problems and to inspire action. The idea for Earth Day was suggested by Wisconsin senator Gaylord Nelson after witnessing the Santa Barbara oil spill of 1969. Shortly after Earth Day was first celebrated, the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act were passed. Earth Day is now the largest civic observance of the worl; more than one billion people worldwide participate in Earth Day activities annually.
