Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 and commemorates the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. The first Earth Day was led by national coordinator Denis Hayes and involved thousands of young protests against the destruction of the environment. It was an interdisciplinary project that brought different groups together under the common goal of saving the environment. Earth Day is a continued effort for a clean environment whereby people from all walks of life organize and demonstrate healthy environmental practices.
Earth Day is considered the birth of the environmental movement, beginning in 1970. Gaylord Nelson, then a Wisconsin senator, founded the day as a national environmental protest. And his efforts proved quite successful: On April 22 of that first year 20 million Americans publicly demonstrated against oil spills, toxic dumps, polluting factories, etc. This first Earth Day also led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency as well as passage of a number of landmark laws protecting the environment. Earth Day will be celebrated next year on April 22, and will mark the 40th anniversary.
