The Domino Theory dominated thought in the USA during the time of the Cold War when it was believed that if any country succumbed to communist rule then it would only be a matter of time before neighboring countries also fell to communist rule. The theory was first proposed by U.S. President Harry S. Truman as justification for sending military aid to Greece and Turkey in the 1940s. U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower then coined this phrase in his famous “domino theory” speech when he spoke about the fall of French Indochine to communism, how this would affect the whole of Southeast Asia, and why Vietnam was important to the USA as a means of ridding the world of communism. This theory was used as justification to send US troops to fight in the Vietnam war.
