Since drawing is considered a creative skill, it uses functions that are located in the right side of the brain, which is designated for abstract design and creation. The left is usually associated with analysis and cognitive thought. In studies like the one below, blood flow to the right frontal lobe of the brain is increased, and also takes less energy the more skilled a person is at a particular task. MRI scans will usually depict the right side of the brain lighting up like a Christmas tree during creative activities like drawing. The frontal lobe is where agree that motor functions are facilitated within the brain, and the right side guides a person’s hand when creating something from memory or thought.
