The World Bank is involved in a huge number of programs aimed at improving quality of life in developing nations. While the effectiveness of these programs is sometimes argued, improvement can be seen in many areas, such as life expectancy, infant mortality, and better sanitation. The World Bank has an entire section of their website dedicated to tracking progress on their Millennium Development Goals with detailed statistics.
In addition to the examples given by the other respondent, the World Bank also provides grants and no interest loans to developing countries that cannot afford to borrow money for economic development on the same criteria as more developed countries. These grants and loans help countries to work on new projects and development to improve their economies.
