Self-sustainable is just a slightly more specific version of sustainability. It means that something can sustain itself independently, without drawing on outside resources. An example would be a house that derives all of the energy it uses from a solar panel or small wind turbine on the roof. Plants are essentially self-sustaining as well – they derive their energy from photosynthesis, requiring only sunlight, water, and some minerals from the soil.
