Rubbish, or garbage, which I believe is what you are referring to, has numerous environmental impacts. Any plastic bottles that are littered on the street, oil that is leaked from vehicle engines, contaminated grass clippings, etc. all have the potential to eventually enter the waterways of the world. So, for example, if you see someone throw a soda bottle onto the sidewalk, it may eventually wash down a storm drain, which will empty into a local waterway. If that local waterway is a river, for example, it will potentially end up in an ocean in the future. There have been countless examples of fish being caught up in plastic as well as many other environmental problems caused by the careless disposal of garbage.

For the garbage that is disposed of properly, there are also environmental problems. In the US, there is nearly 210 million tons of municipal solid waste generated each year. Most of that ends up in landfills.
