What does preservation do that is good for the environment?

Preservation allows for natural habitats to remain as they are.  To preserve means to retain its original character, even if that means not using it at all.  Conservation, on the other hand, allows for people to use the land in a conscious way.  This takes place in the form of national parks and landmarks.  In this mindset, we can enjoy the land if we use it wisely.  Preservationists, however, would rather isolate given areas for the benefit of that particular environment.  Either way, both have a respect for the environment and can only cause more good than harm.
