Melatonin is a hormone that helps control your sleep cycles. Melatonin in pill form is used for sleeping disorders as well as re-orienting oneself to a new time zone. It is not healthy to take melatonin merely as a sleeping aid (Valerian root is much better for this), because it will mess with your cycles. Also, a lot of people feel ill and disoriented if they take melatonin consecutively.
