A zero-energy building is one capapble of creating as much energy as it uses throughout the year. This can be done using several green technologies such as solar and geothermal energy. A lot of thought and creativity is put into these buildings in order to utilize aspects of nature, such as position of the sun for heating and lighting during the day, positioning the builiding and windows in a way that uses wind and breezes to cool the building, and reflective rooftops, rooftop gardens, and awnings to prevent the building from absorbing unwanted heat. There are already several zero-energy buildings out there. The U.S. Department of Energy even has a database for these buildings on their website so you can get a better idea of what went into each building to make it work this way.
